Introduction
Spherical (Rotary) Valve – For Hydro Power Plant
A Spherical (Rotary) Valve is a high-pressure isolating valve installed at the inlet of water turbines in hydro power plants. These valves are designed to isolate the turbine during maintenance and provide rapid emergency closure in the event of turbine trips.
The spherical valve ensures safe and reliable operation of hydro turbines by withstanding high inlet pressures while maintaining minimal pressure drop across the valve during operation.
Applications
- When the penstock pressure near the turbine is high.
- When minimal pressure drop across the valve is required.
- When the turbine flow rate is high.
Spherical (Rotary) Valve – Features
- Split body and full bore design to ensure minimal pressure drop and maximum power output.
- Available in Single or Double Seal design as per project requirement. Resilient seals for low pressure applications, metallic seats for high pressure applications, or a combination of both in double seal arrangement.
- In Double Seal design, the maintenance seal is positioned on the penstock side of the rotor, enabling maintenance or replacement of the main seal while the penstock remains under maximum pressure. Pressurized oil or penstock water is used for seal operation.
- Hydraulic actuation using double-acting cylinder for opening and closing with counterweight arrangement. Optional configuration available with double-acting cylinder for both opening and closing.
- Automatic quick closure during turbine overrun or emergency conditions to protect the turbine.
- Self-lubricating, corrosion-resistant bearings for long service life, even in water with high silt concentration.
- Locking device provided to prevent unintended operation from open or closed position.
- Seats, seals, and guides made of stainless steel to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- Hydraulic interlock and mechanical locking arrangement prevent valve movement when the maintenance seal is activated.
