Introduction
Turbine / Main Inlet Butterfly Valve
The Turbine / Main Inlet Butterfly Valve isolates the turbine from the penstock and acts as the principal protection for a hydroelectric power station. It also enables maintenance of the turbine during shutdown.
These valves are designed to close against turbine runaway during emergency conditions.
The valves close during over-velocity conditions occurring due to turbine trip or runaway situations. These specially designed Butterfly Valves can also be used for turbine inlet applications instead of spherical valves.
Features
A Turbine / Main Inlet Butterfly Valve is used to isolate penstock water during maintenance of the turbine or its accessories.
The valve can be either a Butterfly Valve or a Spherical Valve depending on the line pressure.
The Turbine / Main Inlet Butterfly Valve should be capable of closing under turbine runaway conditions.
When the line pressure exceeds 33 kg/cm², Spherical Valves are used.
